Funny story of the week, being 'Lazy,' and hydraulics...?

So...at different times throughout the week, Katie would prompt me to share our fun gelato lunch outing with people around the office, so I found it only fitting that I share it with the masses via the interweb.

Tuesday, my first day in the office, Katie graciously offered to take me on a grocery run during our lunch hour. On our way to Trader Joe's, we pass a gelato place, and I was asked if I liked gelato. I should probably add that Katie had a very hopeful tone in her voice as she asked. When I told her I did, she got this really big smile on her face, and then she said, "Oh, good! I really look for ANY excuse to go there." So, we were on a mission. Breeze through Trader Joe's, get a few things, and then head on over to the promised land of delightful gelato. Yessssssssssss!

Wellllllllll, not quite. So, we are driving along, and the van we are in is making this horrible noise. It SOUNDED like when your breaks need replacing and then the rotors start making that spine tingling grinding and screeching sound as if we were in the torture chamber of some mid evil palace. Nice, right? Right. As we are getting ready to load up and head for the promised land of deliciousness, we make a new friend who is working with GreenPeace to save the dolphins. The dolphins are getting caught in the nets now, more than ever....and it is important to save them because they are our future. This was the crux of the speech this lady was giving.  She was granola at it's finest, and...honestly looked like her residence was somewhere along Haight-Ashbury. If she had had a VW bus, she really would be a new friend!

So, Katie goes to get the van to come and pick me up at the front of the store. The sound is exponentially worse than when we started on this quick journey. While we are trying to figure out what is going on with the van, Miss Haight-Ashbury comes over and says you guys look like you care about the environment! Katie responds with a "Yes, but no..." and I wanted to say, "Look, lady, there is a time and place for everything...and this is not it. Plus, I did a report in the ninth grade about dolphins, and I have PUH-LENTY of facts..." But I didn't, because right about that time, we saw that the right front bumper had fallen, and a sharp piece of plastic was scraping against the wheel. No bueno. So, here we are, two damsels in distress, and in need of rescuing...

Katie gives me one of the salads I had just purchased, lunch in the shade was covered. Now we were just waiting to be rescued. After a quick phone call, Billy, from the office, comes to the rescue! It's a particularly warm afternoon, and people were walking by left and right, not offering to help. Then there was this one guy...who was so busy staring, that he almost ran in to someone else. Billy just pipes up and says, "Hey, Dude....you wanna help?" The guy just responds with "Nope!"(doesn't stop walking at all), to which Billy responds with, "oh, okay. Just checking. Cause you kinda looked like you did!" I laughed. We've all been there. We never made it to gelato, so...I am anticipating that treat at some point during my time here.

Friday, after work, Katie asked if I had any interest in going to happy hour with her. I am new in town, and as luck would have it, my schedule was completely open! ;-)

So, off we go...to "The Lazy Dog." Happy Hour always has this girl smiling...

Wellllllll...I am getting out of the car, about to transfer into the chair. I turned around, was coming in for a landing, and Katie, Heaven bless her, was trying to reposition the chair to be helpful, and in the process, the chair ended up rolling out from under me, and down on the pavement I went. It was graceful, though. Totally worth a perfect 10 by Olympic standards, if I do say so myself. :) So, rather than scrape up my knees, (and possibly ripping holes in my clothes, we were hopeful that a good Samaritan would come our way. Lo and behold, two people came up, and as easy as one, two, three, I had the atomic wedgie to end all wedgies, and I was up and at 'em!

A little hand sanitizer, and I was ready for my PBR...Well, by the time we got all situated, we actually missed happy hour! Boo.  Good thing about PBR, though, it's pretty cheap no matter what time you drink it. I do believe that the more places I go with Katie, the more entertaining this blog will be. I will see what I can do about that!

Speaking of entertaining, I was able to finally talk to the wheelchair rental place, and I told them of the woes I had had since night one with my rental. So, today, they were bringing another chair out for me to try. The one I had had a broken footrest, and the cushion was so high, I felt like a toddler in a booster seat.

Well, ladies and gentleman, my swap doesn't have the cushion or footrest problem, but it DOES, however, rock back and forth. Seriously. I feel like I am using a chair with hydraulics. I am inching closer to being in a hip hop video, you guys! ;) All I need to do now is start singing, "They see me rollin', they hatin'..." It's not perfect, but it is entertaining. We'll see how this works. In the meantime, I am managing...

Stay tuned for what kind of craziness ensues!
