When I was a senior in college, I was working on a feature story for a class on the controversial topic of stem cell research. In my research, I was finding plenty of quotes from those like Christopher Reeve, who supported stem cell research, but I was not finding any quotes from anyone I knew of that packed a powerful punch in OPPOSING stem cell research.
I was determined to find one of those "spine tingling quotes" that would take a stand with me on the opposing side. I took my search to the internet and my Google search landed me at Joni and Friends, and I began to see just what Joni's ministry was all about, and was so touched. I saw this tab on her website that said something like, "Ask Joni a question..." I typed a short paragraph about what I was doing, and that I was interested to know just where Joni stood on such an issue. I never got an e-mail back, so I thought, "Oh, well...it was worth a shot!" A few days later, I went to my mailbox, and there was a thick envelope waiting for me with the return address "Joni and Friends." I opened it, and there was a wealth of information enclosed. I found a note that read, "Julie-Anne, I hope this helps!" I could not believe it. She hoped that this would help, and BOY did it! I had the quote that I had been needing for my piece. "If we violate a human embryo today, tomorrow we will become callous about the fetus, then the infant, and then people with physical defects...let's influence society with reasoned judgement, strength of character, and a commitment to improve our culture, not diminish it."
I remembered thinking then how awesome it would be to really get to talk to her, but I compartmentalized this into my "dream job opportunities..."
